AlwaysFree: Weekly US Coal Output Increases 1%: EIA

According to data from the Energy Information Administration, the US produced 12.01 million short tons (st) of coal in the week ended September 18. That represents an increase of 1% week-on-week and 11% year-on-year. From January 1 through September 18, US coal output totalled 415.98 million st, rising by 8.4% from the same period of 2020.

Coal production in the Powder River Basin stood at 5.5 million st, increasing by 1% from the prior week and 9.1% from a year earlier. The region’s year-to-date production came in at 185.76 million st, up 6.4% year-on-year.

The Northern Appalachian region produced 1.86 million st of coal during the week, down 1.2% week-on-week but up 22.6% year-on-year. Since the start of the year, the area produced 67.07 million st of coal, up 26.9% from a year earlier.

Coal production in the Illinois Basin stood at 1.55 million st, up 3.9% from a week earlier and 14.6% from a year earlier. The region’s coal production totalled 55.37 million st from January through September 18,  up 13.4% year-on-year.

The Central Appalachian region produced 1.25 million st of coal last week, down 0.2% week-on-week but up 10.3% year-on-year. Year-to-date, the region produced 46.4 million st, up 4.7% from the same period in 2020.
