Oman LNG and Royal Dutch Shell have signed a deal to deliver the Middle East’s first carbon-neutral LNG cargo. The cargo will be produced at Oman LNG’s Sur facility and will use nature-based carbon credits to offset the resulting CO2 emissions from the entire process, including production and deliveries to end customers. Carbon-neutral LNG is expected to account for more than half of global LNG consumption by 2040.
Oman LNG’s Chairman Talal Al Awfi said the agreement reflected the company’s commitment to be a pioneer in decarbonisation and participate in the country’s “Oman 2040” vision. Oman LNG will benefit from the partnership with Shell, which has been the pioneer and leader in the carbon-neutral LNG market.
